Background of the Study
Nurses play a critical role in the healthcare system, providing round-the-clock patient care, administering medications, and managing emergencies. However, the increasing demand for healthcare services, understaffing, and long working hours contribute to excessive workloads, which can negatively affect their psychological well-being (Adeyemi & Okonkwo, 2024).
In Nasarawa State, the healthcare sector faces numerous challenges, including inadequate healthcare personnel and limited resources. As a result, nurses often experience high workloads, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. Research indicates that excessive workload among nurses is associated with emotional exhaustion, reduced job satisfaction, and impaired decision-making abilities (Usman et al., 2023). Despite these concerns, there is limited empirical research on how workload affects nurses’ mental health in Nasarawa State. This study aims to assess the impact of workload on the psychological well-being of nurses in the state.
Statement of the Problem
Many nurses in Nasarawa State work under significant pressure due to increased patient loads, inadequate staffing, and long shifts. These challenges contribute to work-related stress, emotional exhaustion, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. However, there is insufficient research on the extent to which workload affects the psychological well-being of nurses in the state. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the impact of workload on nurses' mental health and proposing strategies to mitigate its effects.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the relationship between workload and psychological well-being among nurses in Nasarawa State.
To identify key stressors associated with excessive workload among nurses.
To propose strategies for improving nurses’ psychological well-being in high-workload settings.
Research Questions
How does workload affect the psychological well-being of nurses in Nasarawa State?
What are the main stressors contributing to psychological distress among nurses?
What measures can be implemented to reduce workload-induced stress among nurses?
Research Hypotheses
High workload significantly contributes to psychological distress among nurses.
Nurses with excessive workloads are more likely to experience anxiety and burnout.
Implementing workload management strategies will improve nurses' psychological well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in public and private healthcare facilities in Nasarawa State. The limitations may include reluctance of nurses to disclose mental health issues and difficulty in obtaining hospital records on nurse-patient ratios.
